Don't Flush Disposable Wipes Down the Toilet!
Don’t Flush Disposable Wipes:
Did you know disposable/flushable wipes present a large problem to our sanitary sewer system? When wipes are flushed down the toilet they not only affect our sewer mains but they also affect our sewage lift station pumps. When introduced with hair and other items in the sewer, they bind together and create an intertwined large mass which can cause blockage in the sewer main lines. Blockages could lead to back up in your home, or it could clog our lift station pumps which could also introduce raw sewage into your home.
We realize the packaging for these products state that they are disposable or flushable and that they are safe to put down your toilet. Unfortunately, that is really not the case. These products do not breakdown. Unlike toilet paper which breaks down fairly quickly, these wipes hold their form for many weeks.
If you use these products we would request that you do not flush them down the toilet, and instead put them in your garbage. No one wants to deal with a basement full of sewage, which could happen if these wipes continue to be flushed.
You should also be aware that the City is not liable for any costs associated with repair to damage caused by a sewer backup created by the introduction of inappropriate materials into the system.
